StorageOS Bee - StorageOS delivers persistent storage

StorageOS Introduces Durable, Simple Persistent Container Storage for Web-Scale Applications, Testing and Development

Scalable, affordable and enterprise-ready storage software integrates with VMware, Docker, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud in 15 Minutes

SEATTLE – DockerCon – June 21, 2016 – StorageOS, a new on-demand storage startup, today announced the global beta launch of its container-based storage software that makes it easier for software developers to create, test, deploy, scale and rebuild containerized applications with enterprise-class production storage. The software-based storage solution improves application development and testing by automating the management of persistent containerized storage, increasing scale and availability and securely moving data between servers, virtual machines or clouds.

Containers are gaining popularity among all sizes of enterprises and the global brands – such as financial services, search engines, news organizations and streaming media services – which use them to quickly build and deploy internet-ready applications that run on multiple platforms and devices. Containers combine all the utilities, logs and other software tools in standardized packages that help applications instantly run anywhere.

By simplifying the provisioning and management of containerized storage, StorageOS enables DevOps specialists and quality assurance managers to quickly test the container on a laptop or a public cloud, such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), in less than 15 minutes and without having to submit a third-party request.

The solution’s ultra-low acquisition cost and pay-as-you-grow licensing help reduce overall costs and speed production time to market. Application containers and data services run together on the same node, delivering the fastest possible performance. As StorageOS can run on bare metal, virtual machines, native container environment and in the cloud, customers can avoid cloud provider lock-in, rapidly implement scale-out production storage and facilitate secure cloud migration.

“The industry adoption of containers has been faster than anyone anticipated, which underscores the need for simple-to-use, cost-effective storage that is highly portable across physical, virtual and cloud devices,” said StorageOS CEO and Co-founder Chris Brandon. “Starting today, software developers can test our claims about 15-minute deployments and application availability even if a container crashes or there’s an issue with hardware. We believe our approach is a more elegant way for DevOps teams to accelerate production adoption of stateful, container-based applications, while cutting their monthly AWS cloud bills with very little work.”

StorageOS Key Features and Benefits

  • Stateful, high-availability storage for deploying databases in containers
  • Cross-platform API support with policy-based rules to automate placement, encryption and replication
  • Integration with VMware, Docker, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud, among others
  • Encrypted cloud data storage at rest and in motion
  • Block-level data replication ensures rapid recovery from hardware failures and eliminates the need for complex disaster recovery solutions or application-level replication
  • Data stays local to the node running the application for maximum throughput, lowest latency and consistent, predictable performance
  • Built-in data reduction, compression and de-duplication to reduce storage hardware costs and improve efficiency
  • Runs anywhere: on-premises, on virtual machines or in cloud instances

“In one of our recent research studies, more than one-third of IT professionals indicated that their organization was already deploying containers,” said Scott Sinclair, senior analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. “The next remaining challenge is persistent storage. The promise of the StorageOS solution is around its ability to quickly deliver resilient storage anywhere to meet the demands of DevOps and cloud architects at a cost structure that makes sense for the cloud era.”

“We’re excited to have StorageOS join the Cloud Native Computing Foundation,” said Chris Aniszczyk, COO of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation. “The company’s knowledge and experience has led to them developing a next generation solution that addresses persistent, stateful container storage for cloud native systems. We look forward to leveraging this knowledge as we further the adoption of cloud native computing.”

Prior to launching its beta, StorageOS incorporated feedback from dozens of potential customers, partners and investors. For additional commentary, read “What the Industry is Saying.
